Review of Bright Star (2009) by Dennis C — 15 Feb 2010
A heart-felt, star-making performance by Abbie Cornish carries this film by Jane Campion, who knows her subject intensely and manages to convey the romanticism of John Keats and his lush poetry. Paul Schneider (from tv's "Parks And Recreation" and a wonderfully, bemusing turn in "Lars And The Real Girl) is charmingly, forcefully nuanced and the film suffers from his absence.
It may be a bit turgid and some may think what's all the hand-wringing about?; but, it has a simple and, it seems, authentic visual style that lets this love affair bloom and fade like the seasons so beautifully captured on screen.
