Review of Bright Star (2009) by Davey M — 19 Feb 2010
A deeply romantic (romantic and Romantic) film of the too-brief life and love of John Keats. Excellent performances, excellent direction, excellent design and music, and it looks like it was shot by Vermeer.
The whole 19th century British romantic costume drama thing is a genre of which I tend not to be the biggest fan, and that Historical Drama feeling to it kept me from loving it, but it's one of the best movies of its kind, and it's particularly good when it detours from the story it's telling and simply allows Keats' words and the images Campion has created for them to speak for themselves.
(This was also my first Jane Campion film--I've been meaning to watch her stuff for awhile now, and I've still definitely got catching up to do).
