Review of Bright Star (2009) by Yesim A — 28 Mar 2010
A slow moving, beautifully photographed, and wonderfully interpreted drama of the love affair between the poet John Keats and his muse, Fanny Brawne. Abby Cornish and Ben Whishaw are superb in the title roles and director Jane Campion captured the agony and the ecstacy of their forbidden love perfectly using much of Keats' poetry to tell the tale. Paul Schneider as Keats' best friend Brown adds just the right amount of vinegar to the story's flavour. Set in the England of 1819 in a place where nature was so glorious and abundant made me yearn for a life before technology took over all of our lives and we polluted our gorgeous planet beyond all recognition.
If you are a romantic, watching this film will leave your heart heavy so do so at your own risk. For me, it was the ideal choice for a melancholy, rainy day.
