Review of Bright Star (2009) by Chanin H — 04 Jun 2010
Martin Scorsese once said that his breathtaking period romance "The Age of Innocence" was his most violent film. There's never as much as a paper cut in Jane Campion's "Bright Star", but it is most definitely one of 2009's most violent films.
There's no saccharine feeling in your mouth after watching Abbie Cornish's heartbreaking performance as Fanny Browne, John Keate's lover. As she goes through the heaven and hell of falling in love with someone she can't marry for financial reasons, the audience never leaves her side. Her breakdown scene is perfectly placed so the aching that you feel throughout the film is finally let out in an orgasmic array of emotions.
