Review of Bright Star (2009) by Sabrina I — 22 Mar 2011
Bio-pics are difficult to make and especially ones about poets. BRIGHT STAR manages to be only slightly successful at it. The film was beautiful to look at; had great acting and competent direction but despite all this I had trouble connecting with the film.
I didn't feel for the love story that is central focus of the film. The scenes of their longing is impeccably and beautifully filmed; I understood their love but wasnt moved by it. I don't think the film had anything new to say.
.it's a rather conventional love story that should have been told in a more fresh manner. Unfortuntely I didn't connect with Keats either; I wish the film was also about what drove him to keep writing despite the fact that wasn't financially successful at it.
I'm not the greatest at poetry, so maybe I missed the film's underlying intensity and other key parts of the film. At any rate; BRIGHT STAR is a good effort just could have been even better.
