Review of Bright Star (2009) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
A wonderful romantic elegy for doomed artistic love, unsentimental but still erotic and honest and deeply-felt. The film's vision of tentative yet gripping love is always pitch-perfect and confident.
Its understanding of poetry, on the other hand, may not be as strong: I sense that it has only a wide-eyed undergrad's dumb awe. But that has its own enthralling, sensitive, fascinating depth; and Keats might have preferred it to a more restrained, tamer reading anyway, if his thirst for youth and sensuality is to be believed in all cases.
