Review of Bright (2017) by Cory G — 09 Jan 2018
One of the most disappointing films of the year. The concept had a lot of potential, but everything about the movie just fell flatter than old beer, which I probably should have been drinking if I had any hopes of enjoying the movie.
The "plot" is laughably thin and predictable from start to finish, the world is so underdeveloped that the entire concept feels like an attempt to pander to fantasy fans, the makeup on the orc characters is horrendously muddy to the point where their faces look like blobs of wriggling paint smudges, the villains are generic, and the lighting is so bad that I had no idea what the hell was going on during the poorly made action scenes.
On top of all this, it was incredibly boring and by the thirty minute mark, I was just waiting for it to end. The plot consists of the flat, underdeveloped characters going somewhere, spouting some lore you won't care about, getting into a shooting match, running somewhere else, and repeating the process all the way until the last ten minutes. The writing is terrible, lazy, and sometimes cringeworthy when Will Smith decides to make an out of place Shrek reference.
If I have to say anything positive about the movie, the effects were decent and the social commentary (while very heavy handed) shows that they had their hearts in the right place while making the film. It's just so sloppy, so underdeveloped, and so boring to sit through. I'm hoping the sequel can give me a better movie, but for now, I'm not hopeful.
