Review of Bright (2017) by Chris P — 06 Jan 2018
Serviceable buddy cop tale, but the fantasy trappings are exactly that - irrelevant trappings. The central macguffin could be any old powerful weapon or valuable treasure. Orcs and elves are mapped so simplistically to PoC and 1%ers that it doesn't work either allegorically or speculatively.
The worldbuilding is atrocious. They establish that a Dark Lord was narrowly defeated 2000 years ago (by implication this replaces the Christ myth in our own culture) but don't explore ANY of the ramifications.
The Alamo and Shrek are mentioned as if those things exist completely unchanged in the Bright world...so why bother postulating a "modern fantasy" world if it's no different to our own?
