Review of Bright (2017) by Chip R — 07 Jan 2018
Upon seeing the critics' reviews at 30% before watching BRIGHT I went in with low expectations. I kept wondering when it was going to take a turn for the worse but it never did. I'm so confused.
I enjoyed the movie. I liked the present day film noir look of Los Angeles and the cinematography was absolutely amazing. I haven't looked up the DP yet but it had a David Fincher look to the lighting and color pallet.
The editing was way better than David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD (which might not have been his fault.) I'm not always a Will Smith fan but enjoyed his performance. And Joel Edgerton's performance in practical effects was great.
The social commentary of orks, elves, and fairies was better than the crap messages The Last Jedi just shoved down our throats. We want to be entertained with the themes and messages in the subtext for us to figure out and engage in.
Not to be spoon fed and told how to feel by labeling one group of people bad and belittling them to promote power to another. These two cops actual had an arc and bonded on this journey despite their differences.
I've noticed a trend, I am no longer giving value to critics' ratings after JUSTICE LEAGUE, THE LAST JEDI, and BRIGHT. That's three movies in a row that I've agreed with the audience and fundamentally disagreed with the critics.
There should never be this huge of a margin between the two. There is a major red flag here on how this is consistently happening.
