Review of Bright (2017) by Ehren D — 27 Dec 2017
The critics are wrong, Netflix's "Bright" is a fun romp of a movie.
Bad Boys meets Tolkien, a not-so-buddy cop movie that understands what most people will enjoy and serves that up. There's a world with tons of implied history and corners to be explored in the background, Netflix wisely left it to be fleshed out in future movies and series.
"Bright" also provides a decent look at topics like family, bigotry and power's ability to corrupt. It's a fun and flawed movie where the flaws don't get in the way. Yes, the second and third act aren't as tight as the first. Yes, there's some messy parts in scripting, cinematography and direction. It still adds up to a fun movie and what I'm looking to get in my Netflix cue.
The critics seem to be mostly dismissing this movie with quips and digs at the director's past work. What they do get correct, messy sections of the plot, cluttered narrative and some unneeded complexity are all easily forgivable because they don't get in the way of the fun.
The critics are keen to remind us Suicide Squad was a bad movie. It's pretty clear that's mostly (if not all) on Warner Bros because the rest of the DC movies aside from Wonder Woman are also bad.
This isn't Suicide Squad, it's something new, dark and fun. You should watch it and it's worth getting a subscription to Netflix to do so.
