Review of Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (2009) by Eli S — 27 Feb 2010
VICTORY FOR THE FORCES OF DEMOCRATIC FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brief Interviews With Hideous Men is one of those movies you watch and you like, but you're not happy with yourself for liking it. This film is basically a collection of mostly well written monologues by men about their sexual proclivities or views on women as a whole. Most of the young women in my life seem to live by this mantra of "men are pigs" and if the scenes in this movie are to be believed....HOLY SHIT WE SO ARE. I felt uncomfortable watching this movie, if for no other reason, the fact that, this sort of behaviour and outlook on females does not fucking compute. I can safely say that I feel slighted by my fellow men if the majority of them think and act like this when it comes to women, it is embarrassing. But I felt compelled, like watching a train wreck, or a really terrible play, I had to see what the hell these fuckers were going to say next! Sure, this movie is funny, but I felt bad for laughing at almost everything I laughed at. The writing is quite good, and most of the performances were spot on, maybe I liked it, despite not agreeing with because it felt so escapist to me. I don't know, this review probably doesn't make any sense, but this film is worth a watch, and if you're a female who has recently been fucked over by a guy, I'd say this is a must watch. I'll probably watch it again because I'm sure there is plenty I have missed, and it does pose many valid questions that sure as shit puzzle me every single day of my life. What do women want? Do they even know? How can I possibly live up to their expectations? Is there hope for me, a decent guy, when most of the men that inhabit this world are bellowing apes and sabotage the name of the good guys out there? I don't know, but this movie gets you thinking, if anything.
