Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Martin A — 05 Oct 2007
No wonder this film regularly makes it into the top ten lists in all sorts of categories. Superb script by Noel Coward, excellent camera work by Robert Krasker (who also did The Third Man just four years later), and David Lean's impeccable direction.
Everything works so well that nothing stands out รข?? except perhaps the stellar performance of Celia Johnson. As more than one reviewer here has put it, it so much more potent for showing nothing more than a kiss.
Nowadays they'd be knocking it off on the second date at the latest. One of the best! (Hey - I live in Ireland, and according to the IMDB, this film was banned here because it portrayed an adulterer in a sympathetic light.
).
