Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Richard P — 19 Jan 2008
Like Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut', this recounts not the story of an affair but rather the story of a marriage and what marriage actually means. The affair really isn't an affair at all, its almost like an internal dialogue for Celia Johnson's character - who longs for recogntion and affection.
The acting is a little aloof and mannered compared to the performances that contemporary American actors were delivering but Lean's direction is often astonishing and eventually, very moving.
