Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Grace J — 04 Oct 2008
How I love Celia's portrayal of requited and yet impossible love. Every second of this film is necessary - there is no dead weight and with each minute you feel you can see why Laura & Alec fall for one another.
It isn't a love based on sex, though obviously a film of this time wouldn't show it even if it was, but a love based on the excitement they instill in one another and a love for life and all things new again.
Mr Jessen is great too as the only one with "enough kindness and wisdom to understand" - somehow knowing and forgiving at the same time without saying anything but "Thank you for coming back to me".
Beautiful.
