Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Joe L — 08 Feb 2009
Flawlessly executed romantic drama which revolves around a deceptive simplicity, and makes no judgment about the morality of its main characters - they do a fine enough job of judging themselves. celia johnson and trevor howard are perfectly cast as only-slightly-more-attractive-than-ordinary people who pull you into the story because the logic of their attraction is irrefutable.
basically, this is a film about adults remembering, once again, what it feels like to fall in love. it's a massive discredit to call the means by which the film is framed a 'device,' since it is so often copied, but almost never this emotionally resonant.
chronologically, 'brief encounter' may be my favorite romance since 'sunrise.'.
