Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Mark O — 14 Mar 2009
This movie does an excellent job of really getting inside of Celia Johnson's character. Infact she narrates throughout it, so you know her every thought and feeling and the whole story is told through her perspective.
You feel her boredom with her life, her growing attraction, her glow, and her desperate guilt. It's hard to play a cheating wife and be sympathetic, but she does it. She's not a villan, she's an ordinary woman.
Beautifully directed and enhanced with Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto. Highly recommended.
