Review of Bridget Jones's Baby (2016) by Joy M — 17 Sep 2016
Very unhappy with the movie. It was carried mostly by the tropes of the original film. I thought it to be a horrible rewrite with a very unfitting ending: too perfect, too fairytale for bridget. A large amount of time was spent on a wedding sequence that added virtually nothing to the plot. Feminists were made fun of, and Bridget's mom asked, "Don't we [women] have enough rights?" and no one corrected her.
Although the book Bridget Jones's Diary is littered with post-feminism, the movie did not come off that way entirely because of the plotline based on Pride and Prejudice. With no Austen plotline to save it, this movie is just a bad modern comedy.
Although it's refreshing to see an older woman as the center of a movie, and shown as attractive, it's sad to see that even after all this time, Bridget Jones can't learn that marriage isn't the end-all-be-all. Marriage can be a happy ending, but it seemed like a very easy, contrite, and obnoxiously average way to end the film, especially for a main character that had very strong moments. I wish they could have taken her character development further; she's supposed to be 43 years old.
It's a post-feminist film.
