Review of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) by Wade G — 26 Jul 2008
Don't you hate it when the industry unsuccessfully tries to revive a movie classic with a completely unnecessary sequel? Well, get over it because this trend doesn't seem to be going anywhere thanks to The Edge of Reason.
The first film, Bridget Jones's Diary was a sharp and charming romantic comedy, though utterly fomulaic. Bridget Jones is a great character that was portrayed with great dedication by the always brilliant Renee Zellweger.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Jones was a one-trick pony and the extra weight Zellweger willingly regained for this rehashed sequel wasn't worth the effort. The most appauling mistake the director made with this film was bringing back Daniel.
Admittedly, Hugh Grant's performance as daniel in the first Bridget Jones was one of the few times I actually enjoyed, better yet tolerated, him on the screen. But, the first movie already had Bridget fall in and out of infatuation with him at least twice and made clear that her feeling for the dastardly player would never rekindle.
Yet they took the lazy route and had her do it again. *Yawn!* All in all, if you're a huge fan of the first movie and have watched it multiple times, you will see this movie regardless of the critics' seal of approval and possibly even enjoy this sad excuse for a sequel just to see Bridget one more time.
For the rest of us, there are plenty of other options that are much more worthy of your time and money.
