Review of Bridge to Terabithia (2007) by Catlin H — 06 Feb 2013
A severe let down. Being a fan of the novel this film, set up horrendously by the trailer to be a fantasy in the CGI league of something like Lord of the rings but for kids. This movie was marketed poorly and as a result when you watch this the fantasy part in Terabithia comprises about 20% of the movie. The real point of this story is the friendship between Jess and Leslie. The problem with this film is that it doesn't seem to know that and tries to cover all bases while failing to delve deeper into these two outcast characters.
The film is inevitably Americanised for today's generation of children, as opposed to the original setting in the book. There is a layer of cheese on this film that just didn't sit right either, and instead of making an honest and raw story of these childhood friends we are given a sappy surface level film.
All of that aside if you have no expectations of this movie you might enjoy it, it was a nice film to watch but having built up in my mind a big budget film version of a favourite book I was inevitably let down.
