Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Sonny W — 16 Jan 2016
I don't know why more people aren't talking about this film. As far as I can tell and in my estimation, it is in every respect a masterpiece. The direction is so subtle, mature and wise that only an elder'y Spielberg could have pulled it off.
When I saw Joel & Ethan Coen's credit in the screenplay I was delighted but not ultimately surprised: their masterful touch is evident throughout the work. Tom Hanks is absolutely at the top of his game but he is also surrounded by an impeccable cast, not least of which is Mark Rylance, who exudes the integrity of his character from the first frame.
The soundtrack is perfect, as is the cinematography, costumes, production design and pretty much everything else. I rarely write reviews for films I have seen, but when I do it's because I am impelled to do so.
I do believe I loved every second of this remarkable film. Everyone involved in making it should be proud.
