Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Richard J — 18 Jan 2016
Solid Cold War thriller from Director Steven Spielberg which tells the true story of an American lawyer who is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers in 1957.
Tom Hanks is in good form as always here but the true stand out is British theatre actor Mark Rylance as Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, Rylance brings a quiet strength to his character that makes him easy to route for. Rylance recounting a story from his childhood is a highlight.
The period is captured well and the cinematography is excellent. The U2 sequence is gripping and there are a handful of other stand out scenes.
But at 2 1/2 hours the film is lengthy and often feels it.
Much to recommend and certainly worth a watch but not vintage Spielberg.
