Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Richard W — 06 Apr 2016
This is an unremarkable film. We are led to believe that the character portrayed by Tom Hanks was some kind of master negotiator, but right from the first scene where is he is negotiating an insurance settlement, the dialogue and script does not support this. It is simplistic and unsophisticated.
The method in which the director introduces the different threads of the story lines is a tired and irritating format.
Rylance is a great actor, but I think we were supposed to sympathize with him. His character lacks any charm, again a fault of the script.
There was no conspiracy or suspense as you would expect from a film about the cold war and spies. It is not really about spies. It epitomizes the way Americans view lawyers as moral upstanding intellectuals. It was nauseating. I have seen rom coms which are more complex.
