Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Matthew S — 14 Sep 2016
Until its stunningly mawkish ending, "Bridge of Spies" is engaging, suspenseful and stylishly directed by Steven Spielberg. Tom Hanks, playing the same guy he has played for 20 years, as effectively as he always plays him, is well cast, and Mark Rylance, who was so brilliant in BBC's "Wolf Hall", is excellent.
Roger Deakins' cinematography is a marvel and the film looks beautiful. Honestly, Spielberg's sentimentality knows no limits and an otherwise very entertaining and well made film is pretty much ruined by his decision to tie everything up into a neat, pretty bow.
Whether or not the film entirely reflects reality is beside the point - the ending feels contrived.
