Gripping, thrilling and enjoyable, Bridge of Spies is a brilliant old-school Cold War spy thriller which benefits from powerful direction, top-notch performances and a story of friendship, personal values and determination. With a fascinating story and an overall visual style that brings back the classical spy-thriller film-making of previous decades, the movie is a most welcome return to the genre roots while it remains incredibly up-to-date despite a topic which could be considered nowadays far from being modern.

Based on the true story of James Donovan (Tom Hanks) and his memoirs, Bridge of Spies tells the most curious events surrounding the conviction of the Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) and the following negotiations exchange which take place in East Berlin. It is not only a story of incredibly interesting events, but also a clash of values, of personal integrity and reflection of a period when values and constitutional rights were challenged. To the great delight of all viewers Steven Spielberg has returned with a flawless delivery that combines convincing cinematography, sober, but impactful visuals, amazingly convincing performances and of course a story that even though it is well know, still contains enough twists to keep you fully engaged. Without further spoiling what is all about, I would only say that Bridge of Spies has "Oscar Awards" written all over it. With 6 nominations, among which for Best Motion Picture, for Best Supporting Actor of Mark Rylance and Best Screenplay of the Ethan and Joel Cohen, this spy-thriller might not be a big winner (due to its earlier release date), but it could already be considered a contemporary classic ! A must see movie !
