Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Gordon H — 21 Feb 2016
A Tense Spy Swap Thriller!
A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, 'Bridge of Spies' tells the story of James Donovan (Tom Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on an near impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. High stakes and suspense power a story inspired by true events that capture the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.
This story, as told by one of the most incredible directors of all-time -- Steven Spielberg, is a tense spy swap thriller! I remember when Berlin, the capital of Germany, was split right down the middle by a massive wall, effectively dividing it into two separate countries: one controlled with an iron fist by the U.S.S.R. and the other a free nation. This wall served as a physical reminder of what the Cold War was really all about. 'Bridge of Spies' takes place at this infamous wall during the very heart of that war. Hanks' performance as James Donovan is inspiring. If only each of us had the courage to do what was right no matter the consequences, what a better place this world would be. I highly recommend this remarkable film!
