Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Dana F — 04 Jul 2017
Leave it to Spielberg to deliver on a polished, tense, engaging, and emotionally resonant film. Still, it's not as tight as many of his other films. It's good, even very good, but it just doesn't move along quickly enough to make it great.
The whole movie is almost entirely people talking, and it's easy to zone out. It's engaging, but with a little more trimming, this film would have been mesmerizing. The performances are top notch, and Mark Rylance deserves his Supporting Actor nod.
Though the tension is what drives the film, there are also some pretty exciting sequences, and the end is surprisingly moving. It has that same traditional feel that all Spielberg films do, but at least he knows how to do it and do it right.
