Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Byron B — 30 Apr 2016
The Coen Brothers share writing credit of this film, but it doesn't have their stamp on it. Spielberg directs this Cold War period picture in a way that feels so old-fashioned. It is fairly entertaining especially with Tom Hanks exuding as much charm as his insurance lawyer character can and Mark Rylance as the calm and collected Soviet spy.
The subplot about American pilot Powers, the man who would be exchanged for Russian spy Abel, was not at the same level as the rest of the story. I liked the way life in America and Russia were compared and contrasted through observation through train car windows.
This is a Cold War spy drama without many thrills.
