Review of Bridesmaids (2011) by David L — 23 Dec 2014
Despite a strong reluctance to avoid this, I finally succumbed to putting myself through hell for a couple of hours, which wasn't really worth it. Other than a few amusing moments provided via the overweight characters (and Matt Lucas), this was as girly, cheesy and predictably American as expected.
Centred around the maid of honour who's life is spiralling out of control due to the closure of her bakery and lack of any stable male companion, she attempts to make the most of organising her best friends hen do.
Rivalling the brides posh friend who can offer to do everything twice as big and twice as better, our maid again struggles to provide a memorable experience, and instead has another mental breakdown that leads to her leaving her job, losing her new man, and moving back home to live with mother.
That is until, little miss perfect offers a reconciliation when the bride goes AWOL, and in return puts a few of her pieces back together again to help her get back on track. As with all comedies, it's difficult to sustain the humour all the way through, and this did tail off heavily towards the end.
I felt that two of the bridesmaids rarely had any memorable screen time and I'm not even sure what their purpose was. In its defence, this movie clearly wasn't created for the male audience so I doubt the producer would be offended by my comments as I'm sure its target audience would love this.
For me though, it undersold itself and didn't play to its strengths. Having said that, if this is the female equivalent of the hangover series of films, I'm sure there'll be a few more to try and improve this.
