Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Tonia P — 20 Oct 2008
It's the cinematic equivalent of the charge of the light brigade... trying to fit a great book with at least a dozen fantastic characters into just two hours... knowing that everyone will compare it to the brilliant TV version which had about 11 hours to do the same thing.
So why, when it has to tell the story at break neck pace, does this film seem so plodding, uninspired and boring? Having said that there is some fantastic acting, particularly by Emma Thompson and Ben Whishaw.
Michael Gambon does his usual dull craggy Gambon thing. The weak link, and unfortunately its a crucial part so she lets the whole film down, is Felicity Jones who is obviously completely out of her depth.
.. no chemistry at all with Goode's Ryder character.
