Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Beth S — 12 Aug 2008
This is the perfect example of a film festival-bait movie critics feel peer-pressured into rating highly.
Utter torture. A dull, meandering downer with few redeemable qualities. We have an hour and thirty minutes of cliched, aimless wandering, perpetuated by a main character who changes no one's life and doesn't seem to grow himself--and then, suddenly, in the last ten minutes we have like three clumsily articulated themes? I don't think so. It would've been nice for the major ideas to, I don't know, guide the rest of the film. The worst of both uptight Catholicism and schoolboy self-indulgence--both simplistically treated.
Good performance by Ben Wishaw, though.
