Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Rose E — 31 Aug 2008
This movie condenses incredibly complex characters and their motivations into cliches. While the movie ventured so far as to include an actual kiss between Sebastian and Charles, it eliminated the homoerotic storyline that exists in the mini-series, and I suspect, the book.
The movie turned Charles into a status seeking whore... Which is so tragically boring in the way it was done. I recently finished watching the 11 hour BBC mini series that was made in the 80s. Although I didn't really like the mini-series, I did appreciate the complexity of the characters --something which is lacking here.
The only thing this film had going for it was Emma Thompson and cinematography.
