Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Jacqui's B — 08 Nov 2008
While one might assume it is always difficult to top the '81 BBC TV Series in a feature length film, especially with the author, Waugh co-writing, and actors such as Jeremy Irons, Gielgud, and Anthony Andrews, there is still merit in revisiting favorites.
So my advice is, part from the past - this version on par with another recent BBC film release, "The Duchess" and both films deliver much of the same richness in styling. There are highlights of acting, such as moments between Goode and his film father, Patrick Malahide, Emma Thompson's ferociously Catholic mother, and the darkly intense Hayley Atwell.
Topical & current again (if it ever went away) is the thread of debate on the existence of God - as noted with another Oxford/BBC alumnus, Dawkins, and his book, "The God Delusion." If anything, it raises awareness and inspires people to view the original and to read Waugh's book.
Overall enjoyable.
