Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Cynthia O — 13 Dec 2008
Well. am deeply convinced that the novel is a must-read after watching.
I'd say it's an evident attempt to cover as many as possible in a little over two hours. Given the time constraints, it's considerably good. Though it really demands audience to work out linkages on his own with reference to the subtle hints that links a line perhaps sixty minutes ago to support a conclusion arrived juz before the end credits, Ben Whishaw and the cinematography are reasons sufficient to watch this.Whishaw's been always stolid as in perfume/i'mnotthere. here you really gotta see he enlivens the whimsical charming homosexual sebestian so full of fiery passion. also helps to explain why action in the 2nd half dwindles to a flat story-telling with the absence of wishaw and emma thompson.
P.s. trailer and synop are pretty misleading. it's actually a tragedy involving a Catholic-fanatic family, ironies about extreme forms of faith and worship. the desirable position between the poles of the italian style or the Flyte's is for you to decide. nice touch on guilt and conscience. love the music theme. btw, the young ones remind me of wuthering heights and the dreamers.
