Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Carole S — 22 Feb 2009
Movie adaptations of novels are always tricky. Most novels make better mini-series and Waugh's book is no different. It's been a while since I saw the mini series and even longer since I read the book. However, it seems that the producer/writer/director of this film took lots of liberties with the story and the characters -- Sebastian in particular.
They made Sebastian more flamboyant than in the novel. If they did this because audiences today are more sophisticated and don't care that is just stupid. Novels are not only products of a writer's mind they are product's of their cultures and the morals of the time and the feel of the original novel should be left alone. That's a tall order but it's been done well so many times it made this movie kind of piss me off.
I'm going to pull out my copy of the book and re-read it.
Emma Thompson -- you should be ashamed of yourself.
