Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Ksawery S — 18 Apr 2009
Maybe I'd have liked this if I didn't love the book so much. Maybe I'd have liked it if I'd not seen the BBC series. Then I wouldn't have known that all the good bits were culled from the TV series - half the actors seemed to be channelling their TV counterparts.
I also wouldn't have known how they'd distorted the Julia of the book - the Julia who married against the wishes of her family and society. The Julia who only got together with Charles as a fully-grown woman, who'd lived to regret being cast out of society once.
This film decides that Charles and Julia were always together, and loses something of them both in that.
