Emma Thompson is stunning as the family matriarch in this British epic, and the entire package is visually powerful. But the plot weaves a tragedy that ultimately doesn't engage. It ends with a bit of a dull thud.
Never having seen the original BBC series, I couldn't compare... nor am I likely to sit through that many hours of viewing just to find out!
