Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Adrienne K — 28 Aug 2009
Matthew Goode is no Jeremy Irons, but perhaps that's all for the good(e). Ben Whishaw is tremendously fractured and frail, perfect as a Sebastian much more so than the blonde fop in the TV series. Perhaps I didn't quite think Hayley Atwell fit the Julia role (much too fleshy and muscular for the internal psychological frailties implied), but she was a vast improvement at least on Diana Quick from the miniseries.
So, even if the film compresses many of the subtleties, the casting is so much more appropriate. Ah, to see such a lot of Magdalen College on film..
