Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Daniel K — 14 Dec 2009
2: I didn't enjoy it as much as I was hoping I would. It's a pretty standard English period piece, which is to say adequate, but nothing special. The locations are superb and performances are of quality for the most part, but neither the story nor the execution drew me in like the best of this type do.
I would have to say the fault is probably shared about equally between the source material, the adaptation for the screen, and the directing/execution. It lacks a bit of the vitality that is necessary to make it entirely engaging.
I still enjoyed it, but not wholeheartedly. As I understand it, part of the problem may be that it was so compressed. Another issue was the lack of a truly watchable protagonist.
