Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Elizabeth B — 07 Mar 2011
The director has not understood his material in this unfaithful adaptation of Waugh's novel and this is clear in the the misdirection of both Emma Thompson and Hayley Atwell, whose characterisations do little justice to the triumphantly portrayed complexities of the characters in the novel.
No one in the cast, save Ben Whishaw possibly, seems to understand their character's relationship with religion and this ignorance, nay, dislike of the idea of catholicism is entirely palpable in the acting which lets the believability of this film down enormously.
