Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Stephen M — 11 Oct 2008
Disappointing period drama, based on the classic Evelyn Waugh novel, that fails to stir and suffers from indifferent acting in the three lead roles. In an apparent effort to keep as much of the novel's events as possible within a limited running time, the director has sacrificed emotional involvement for plot.
The result is a film that looks nice and has plenty going on, but the characters are not very likeable, or even believable. Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon are reliable as ever in support of course, but one misses them when they are offscreen.
