Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Shannon — 05 Mar 2009
Not a bad adaptation at all, though parts of it were over-dramatized by Andrew Davies, which annoyed me a little bit. I mean, it wasn't really necessary, the plot is dramatic enough as it is.
The best thing about this movie was most probably the acting (I was particularly impressed with Ben Whishaw). Julian Jarrolds did quite a good job directing too, and along with the music and the beautiful settings, I thought the beginning of the movie recreated the summer stillness found in the book quite beautifully. As for the rest of the movie, well that's where it started being a bit overly-dramatic and where the plot was slightly twisted, so I liked it a bit less, but it wasn't completely horrible either.
Well made movie, good actors, but to me it's definitely not perfect, not on its own, and not as an adaptation.
