Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Mr P — 08 Mar 2007
One of the few movies where the sequel is better than the original. Great cast, great score, great mix of comedy, drama, and horror. It's the ultimate horror movie.
Like King Kong, this is a movie monster you really care about. Frankenstein's Monster is a victim of man's idea to tinker with the secrets of life and death. He can't help it if he just wants to be loved...and when he's not...he's an angry destructive savage.
Possibly the perfect horror movie. James Whale utilizes Franz Waxman's timeless score, grande Universal horror style sets and backdrops, brilliant lighting, and the ultimate cast. This story surpasses the original in the fact it has depth. You see into the characters, you feel the Monster's pain. You also get a great tongue-in-cheek satire of American society along the way. It's surprising that with the strict code back then, the film could get away with so much (i.e. see and hear the obviously homosexual Dr. Pretorius and hear what he has to say about life, death, and God).
Truly Whale's masterpiece...this film epitomizes classic Hollywood.
