Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by A R — 26 Jul 2007
One of the few sequels that bests the original. It develops the story established in the first film, ending up closer to the novel even in its characterization of The Monster and the defective creation of The Bride.
But Whale's real genius is the introduction of that other warped doctor, and in an inspired sequence we see another version of life, a literal microcosm. Visually, it is heightened, but it is not merely moody.
It's beautiful. I was lucky enough to catch this on the big screen, which I find the preferable means of viewing for any film of the period.
