Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Paavo I — 02 Dec 2007
I'd argue this is the best sequel ever, over all those Godfather, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings movies. While the first one was good fun, it didn't really go that deep in terms of isolation, discrimination and frustration as this one. Karloff really shines as the monster that is really just a poor, misunderstood creature. It's heartbreaking, how the creature is uncapable of being loved, even by its female counterpart. The only exception being the blind hermit, that can only see the person inside. The film also benefits of having a true villain with Dr. Pretorius.
The movie was really ahead of its time with its themes of being diffirent, of being hated because of that (better keep in mind the director was a homosexual), and ultimately, suicide.
Being funny, sad, exciting and heartbreaking at the same time, plus being iconically beautiful, this is as close as a perfect movie, as they go in my books.
