Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Juan C — 02 May 2008
Although regarded by most critics as superior to the original Frankenstein I have to say that I liked the original much more. In my opinion, just as Karloff suggested, the monster would have been more compelling if he was mute (or said 2 or 3 word only).
In the original Frankenstein, we are presented with a likable, misunderstood and innocent creature that in The Bride is turned into a half stupid, mindless monster.
There are some quite good moments, like when the monster befriends with the blind man but still I was not as moved as I was with the first film. In addition, the comic parts are not as funny.
I can understand that in the 30s this was a huge success but I think that it has not aged well.
