Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Danny D — 13 Nov 2010
The Monster (Boris Karloff) survived the fire in the first film. While on the run from angry villagers, a blind man gives him shelter and teaches him how to speak, as well as the importance of friendship. So the Monster returns to his creator Victor Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and forces him to create a companion for him.
It's funny how satisfying an hour and 15 minute movie could be back in the day. Film-makers like James Whale could tell a completely realized story in a short time and still deliver a masterpiece. In Scream 2, where the film students are discussing how sequels are never better than the first, the Bride of Frankenstein was never mentioned. I think because the discussion would have been dismissed right away if this film was mentioned, it's a rare sequel that's actually better than the first.
