Review of Bride of Chucky (1998) by Luke P — 27 Oct 2008
The Child's Play series never really shared the critical success of other slasher franchises, and it looked it had died on it's third instalment (partly due to it's ridiculous attachment to the Jamie Bulger murder cases).
However, 7 years later, we received Bride of Chucky. Writer Don Mancini wisely decided to take the series down a more comedic route, with Chucky (once again voiced by Brad Dourif) getting himself a bride (voiced by Jennifer Tilly) and going on a cross country killing spree with two teens (including Knocked Up's Katherine Heigl) unwillingly along for the ride, in search of an amulet that can restore their souls back to human bodies.
The humour comes from the interplay between Chucky and Tiffany, with Chucky gettng most of the best lines, and there are also some pretty fun and inventive deaths, and a bonkers ending that nicely sets up the next sequel.
However, this being a horror-comedy, it's neither massively funny nor particularly scary and/ or gory, and so I can't really recommend it too highly. This is a franchise that perhaps should have stayed buried.
