Review of Brick Mansions (2014) by Patrick K — 06 May 2014
Ten years on from the original District 13, David Belle is back doing what he does best. Not acting, mind, but appearing in District 13 now rechristened Brick Mansions, set in near future Detroit, and considerably dumbed down for the American market.
The plot is once again to con the assorted drug dealers and low-lifes of the banlieu into blowing themselves up in some misguided scheme for urban development, but because David Belle has been here before he recognises it for the scam it is just in the nick of time.
The rose-tinted ending where the druggie gang take over City Hall and everyone is smiling and winking at each other when they were unloading heavy ordnance at each other a half hour before has to be seen to be believed.
Not even Ken Loach would have gone this far in an elevation of the underclass. Depressing, but some nice stuntwork. Leave your brain in a jar by the door.
