Review of Brick Mansions (2014) by Spike V — 13 Jul 2014
Painfully redundant and lazy remake of the far superior French original, District B13, that was clearly only made for idiots who can't read subtitles and to make a quick buck. The story and action scenes are 100% identical, but they lack the conviction and heart that the first one brought by hiring actors who honestly can't perform the level of stunts required.
It's great to see David Belle back doing his amazing parkour stunts, but it's getting old as this is the fourth film I've seen him do his schtick in. Paul Walker is okay at best, but RZA needs to stop pretending he can act, and it's ironic that he isn't the foreign actor here, yet you can't frickin understand him! Brick Mansions is pointless in every way and had me face-palming again and again at it's incompetence and inability to coherently film it's action scenes.
There's a nice, quick girl fight and the opening chase adds some flourishes that weren't in the original, but it's just a lame cash-grab that required zero thought.
