Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Daniel A — 11 Dec 2007
Didn't read the book, so I saw this one on the strength of the trailer. The film chronicles a Bangla woman's relationship with her family, her native land and the eponymous East End District. Desire and duty clash as Nazneen (played by the tantalizing Tannishtha Chatterjee!) finds love - and ultimately her own power - outside of the confines of her arranged marriage.
A strong cast masters the art of nuance at key points for maximum dramatic effect. Also, Nazneen's hubby (Satish Kaushik), a character I expected to despise, turns out to be refreshingly complex, exhibiting and eliciting considerable emotional range.
A perfectly poignant piece of cinema, thoroughly recommended.
